Arthur Health and Cleveland Clinic London Set New Industry Standard with 12-Month Post-Operative Protection for Self-Paying Patients

— Cleveland Clinic London and specialist insurer Arthur Health today announced a landmark partnership to provide self-paying patients with comprehensive, year-long insurance coverage for surgical complications.

Launching initially for hip and knee replacements, this initiative eliminates the financial uncertainty often associated with self-funding (private) surgery. While post-operative complications are a recognised risk in any procedure, they frequently leave self-paying patients facing unexpected costs and complex administrative hurdles. This new policy provides a robust safety net, ensuring patients are covered for no-fault complications for 365 days post-surgery — at no additional cost.

Redefining the Private Healthcare Safety Net

In a sector where ‘coverage’ windows are often time-limited or clinically restrictive — or nothing at all — this partnership introduces a seamless “patient-first” model. By integrating Arthur Health’s innovative insurance directly into the surgical package, Cleveland Clinic London removes the “limbo” patients often experience when requiring further treatment, diagnostics, or intensive care following complications — from the moment they leave theatre.

Mike Herb, Finance Director at Cleveland Clinic London, commented:

“Our priority is the patient’s recovery, not their paperwork. It is fundamentally wrong for a patient to face financial or administrative distress while dealing with a surgical complication. While many providers leave patients to navigate these challenges alone, we are choosing to do things differently. By partnering with Arthur Health, we are providing immediate, comprehensive care without the burden of unforeseen costs.”

Bridging the Gap in Patient Trust

Cleveland Clinic London is globally recognised for its consultant-led model and world-class intensive care. This collaboration reinforces that reputation by extending the hospital’s duty of care far beyond the operating theatre.

Oliver Bee, CEO of Arthur Health, stated:

“This insurance was born from a simple observation: patients felt abandoned when things didn’t go to plan. We saw a systemic need to restore trust in private healthcare by removing the barriers between a complication and its resolution. This isn’t just a policy; it’s a commitment to patient dignity. Together with Cleveland Clinic London, we are setting a new gold standard for what the private sector should provide.”

A Future-Facing Partnership

While the program begins with orthopaedic excellence in hip and knee replacements, both organisations intend to scale this model across other self-funded surgical specialties. The initiative represents a significant shift in the UK healthcare landscape, offering self-paying patients a clearer, safer, and more secure path to life-changing surgery.
